Poinçons (Punchmarks, Hallmarks)
Poinçon tête de sanglier - Paris 1838-1962
The “poinçon tête de sanglier” (boar's head silver hallmark) was used in France from May 10, 1838 to December 31, 1961 as a hallmark on small objects of silver, including military medals and clasps, to certify that the hallmarked objects conform to the legal minimum standard of 800 parts of pure silver per thousand parts of metal (.800 argent).
The hallmark is the left profile of a boar's head, and certifies that the silver content of an object meets the “second title silver” (“argent second titre”) standard of 800 parts of pure silver per thousand parts of metal, in conformance with the standard of the Paris Assay Office.
For reference, sterling silver is 925 parts silver per thousand parts metal (.925 argent).
